This research project will be focused on monitoring milkweed species and monarchs in central and southern Alberta. Butterfly surveys on other butterfly species in Alberta will also be collected. Additionally, native milkweed species that are a conservation concern, such as green comet milkweed will be planted in local protected areas. Milkweed will also be shared with the community to plant in their own gardens.
For this project, a butterfly pollinator garden will be created with several butterfly host plants and native plant species. Planting native plants is a helpful way to to support pollinators in your area. The pollinator garden will also implement a bee and lady bug house. In addition, milkweed will be planted in several parks and protected lands to support monarch butterflies on their migration. Stay tuned for more updates on the pollinator garden and a video that will break down how to start your own butterfly garden.
Citizen science and community engagement is an important part of this research project. Making butterfly and other pollinator education and research more engaging and accessible to the community is vital for conservation efforts.
Another focus of this project is creating educational resources and a community resource guide on monarch butterfly and other pollinator conservation and education in Alberta. Follow the project for updates on the release of these materials.
